Forgotten Admiralty: Broom Lane

While passing by the High Court, we noticed a stone lintel on display. From right to left, it phonetically spells out "Broom Lane". A small sign informs us that this marked the entrance to a lane by a bazaar in the first days of colonial Hong Kong.

Hkmaps shows two bazaars in the area of what is now Admiralty. Morgan's Bazaar has a byway stretching behind it; perhaps that was Broom Lane?

Morgan's Bazaar was run by Captain Morgan, who bought land at the first auction in Hong Kong. Gwulo says the Hong Kong Dispensary set up shop in this bazaar after a typhoon destroyed their original premises. You've probably visited them - they're called Watson's today.

Hong Kong has so many stories to tell. While comparing maps to find Broom Lane, this one shows that the bazaars are gone - but what on earth happened at Scandal Point? Until next time!
