8 April 2022: Rubbish Maps

Walked past the Aberdeen Technical School and noticed these lovely plaques. Founded by a religious order, the Chinese signage is written in traditional right to left. ATS was bombed during the Battle of Hong Kong as it was the temporary Royal Navy HQ.

On the praya itself are rows of older shophouses, including a recycling depot. The local poor often bring the cardboard and aluminium cans they scavenge and turn it in for a few dollars to survive another day. Today, there was something very interesting in the pile.

This is a Longman English textbook published in 1982, which is full of helpful tips to survive being in Surrey. In the back was the course description - this whole collection was for an Open University course offered in 1984! Who has been keeping them here for forty years?

Also included in the pile was this map of Hong Kong, neatly folded. Assuming it's also from the mid-eighties, the MTR is open but some landmarks and place names are quite different.

If you're off to hike the Dragon's Back, it will be in Cape d'Aguilar Country Park.

Do check out the Apleichau Power Station, or perhaps hike on Pan Nap Shan towards Hong Kong Wai.

If you're heading up to Kowloon Peak, make sure to stop by the grave of Sun Yat-sen's mother.

The Republic of Yuen Long's holdings included more wetland, and the City of Sadness is yet to be built.

We can't go to Tseung Kwan O or Tiu Keng Ling, but how about Junk Bay and Rennie's Mill?

In 1971, the SS Fatshan's anchor chain broke during a typhoon and struck several vessels, causing it to eventually capsize and sink off Lantau. 88 died, with only 4 survivors.

The back of the map contains a description of Hong Kong's economy, major industries, education and social welfare system.

A few flow charts of how Hong Kong's government works...

... as well as addresses and phone numbers of government bodies. You can try to ring them if you like, but we're signing off for now.
